Have an idea for a project, but don't know where to find data? Want to present a lightning talk to your peers in a relaxed, informal setting? Curious about the work of other GIS professionals in your area? Need some help with mapping or interested in seeing new approaches? Host or attend a "Mappy Hour"! These are informal get-togethers where all sorts of people, from GIS professionals and students to curious passers-by and hobbyists, meet up for a while to discuss, map, present, visit, and plan all things geospatial!
What is a mapathon? It's a coordinated event where participants focus their skills on mapping and editing data for a particular event, use case, or map source. Frequently used to assist with disaster response and humanitarian aid efforts, mapathons are not only a terrific way to crowdsource assistance, but also for participants to learn new tools and sharpen their geospatial skills. OpenStreetMap, a free and editable digital world map, provides a useful and common platform for mapathons to quickly organize work and streamline editing.
